For a town of 450 people, the Olympic torch coming to town was a big deal … and what a big deal!
On a beautiful January morning, people started to line the main street of Kyle at 7:30 a.m. to catch a glimpse of history in the making. Free coffee and hot chocolate was given out by Kyle & District Economic Development and the anticipation of the crowd grew and grew as the moment we were all waiting for approached.
I was originally worried that, in the winter morning darkness, we would not be able to gain the full experience of the torch; but, I was so wrong. With the backdrop of a dark prairie sky, the lights of the convoy came into view and you could feel the excitement of the crowd. The lights and music from the Coke and RBC trucks was a sight to behold and whipped the crowd’s excitement to a pitch in time for the torch’s arrival.
Everyone could feel the Olympic spirit. Spectators young and old could feel the pride and happiness of the torch bearers as they passed by; what a proud moment to be a Canadian.
